DANCE @ LIVE, is one the largest dance competitions in Japan and it is predominantly based in Tokyo. Dancers from around the world compete to win prestige points and a large cash prize.
The styles are Freestyle, Hiphop, House, Kids Freestyle, Bboying and University Team battle called Rize. There are often guest dancers from outside of Japan brought in specially to compete and adds greater competition to the already high level battles.
Here I competed in Hiphop where I was able to dance against Candoo and UK. UK took the round and I was contented with my performance. It so happened that there were other people pretty contented with my performance and that’s when I met Ted Endo, a journalist from London of Japanese decent.
Ted was really interested in the differences and similarities between street dance in UK and Japan.

With so much information out on the Internet it is sometimes hard to find the right site that has the best information on street dance. Some street dance blogs and websites are specific to an area or a category and some talk about a persons own experience, whatever it may be there are many out there for you to chose to your liking. However below are a list of my top 5 blogs and websites that have helped me find the information I needed to write up my own blog, to learn and understand street dance more and to get involved with a group of like minded people in mutual discussion whether it be sharing or debating.
Looking for a place to jam? or place where you can meet other dancers of all styles practicing relentlessly on their routines for the next Japan Dance Delight competition or developing their own skills. Do you want to just practice without the need to spend so much money on classes, a place to dance that is open every day, all day, all weather. Well Osaka has many places to street dance and here are my tried and tested 6 hot spots to dance in.
Tony McGregor and Marjory explain in the video below what the essence and roots of House dance are. They describe house dance as a collection of emotion and ideas and relate it to a gathering of a like minded people at a dinner table bringing in their own dish to add to the feast. One thing that did stand out was the statement that House dance IS a feeling and if you’re pure, people resonante with you and understand the person you are dancing on the floor in that moment.
Recently friends of mine from UK came to visit Japan, mainly for an excursion across the orient but also to seek out new possibilities in dance, music and lifestyle. After these two weeks…those from the UK who were not able to come at the time, are definitely kicking themselves..hard! Andre from Reading now soon to be a london resident is a prestigious dancer/choreogrpaher with a super degree in Civil Engineering and Construction Mangement (geek!) now working for a performance arts company and Turbo one of the best dancers in the UK and a finalist from the SKY1 television show “Got To Dance.” They all had something to say about their time in Japan. Put it this way, they did not want to go back.
Your Karate Kid is my Breakin’, your Shoalin Monks are my Electric Boogaloos and your Jackie Chan is..well there’s a bit of Jackie Chan in all us dancers really. But are deadly arts from the mystical East really similar to street dance? I mean one is for fighting with kicks, punches and hadokens. The other is more let’s party, mingle, dance socially and hopefully score with an infatuated lady. Well you’d be surprised to see that there are many similarities between dance and kungfu all which share a powerful yet obvious sentiment; respect for one another.

Here are 10 reasons why JAPAN is the best place to dance street dance styles. The question of “where is the best place to dance in the world?” was put to a number of foreign dancers. The ones who mentioned Japan (and it was a large number!) were then asked why they thought so.
Their accounts on Japan’s dance scene were gathered and refined to form a final 10 of the most common reasons that makes JAPAN the best place to dance on Earth. They are…………..
Where is the best place indeed? This all depends on what you are looking for. Do you want to party more, battle more, train in an inspiring environment or do just want to be around more great dancers?
Me, I’d say Japan as it answers alot of the needs asked above. Many will definitely disagree for obvious reasons like: “Japan is not where hiphop started?” or “The Japanese can’t get down like the Americans!” for example.
Whether you think it really is up to what you wish to gain from dance. The best places in my book are France, New York, LA and Japan.
Many will state that France is the best for there are countless parties and many world champion dancers in all styles across the street dance art form. If you dance there, you’re sure to come back glowing with super powers.
Many will look to LA for its huge influence and roots of Locking and Popping styles as well as many over west coast dance styles that has brightened the dance floor with crowd pleasing, funky moves and fresh clothes.
Many will stand up for New York as being the Eden for dance hiphop and house especially. With so many pioneers and originators of the dance style, who wouldn’t want to rub shoulders them? The invigorating, friendly, highly spirited and inspirational dance parties that happens all night are the Sirens of the dancers heart.
Japan is an amazing place for dance and I will discuss listing the great attributes of this wonderful nation, in and out-of dance. I will talk more about this in my next blog.
In my opinion you can gain so much in dance by venturing into these great nations and exchanging moves on the dance floor communicating feelings that surpasses any spoken language. However it is also important to understand that although these are ideal locations to dance the most important is where you are? Dancer’s should strive to do the best they can with what they’ve got and where they are and simply build on that. The world today isn’t so large that you HAVE to travel embarking upon a legendary crusade to learn all street arts known to man, there are so many media formats to obtain the information you desire.
